The group were captured at a State Arrival Ceremony held in honor of Queen Elizabeth's State Visit. The ceremony was held on the South Lawn of the White House and, after a day of events, was followed by a State Dinner that evening in the Rose Garden. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited the United States from July 6 to 11 in celebration of the American Bicentennial. During their six day trip, they visited eight American cities, starting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

President Reagan also entertained Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, at his private ranch, the Rancho de Cielo (or Ranch in the Sky) in the rural Santa Ynez mountains outside Santa Barbara, where they dined on enchiladas, chiles rellenos, refried beans, tacos, rice, and guacamole.
